A Lost Cause

Okay, admittedly I do have a tendency to get lost and not ask for directions. Apparently "not asking for directions" is encoded into a man's DNA. Really, I saw it on the Discovery channel or something.

So recently I purchased a GPS unit - specifically a Garmin nuvi 750 - to help me find my way. Aside from mobile navigation on different PDA-type devices, this is my first true GPS system. And let me tell you just how completely awesome it is. Out of the box it actually had a charge in the battery, which was nice. I promptly plugged it into my computer to update the files and register the device. I also had purchased a couple of 4GB SD cards so I can load music into its MP3 player. Yep, it has one of those too; along with an FM transmitter in which you can get the turn-by-turn directions and music through your car's speaker system. Hey, it can also play audio books from audible.com.

The first true test involved plugging in my home address from the grocery store. Lame, I know. Then I just had the mapview open while I drove around testing accuracy, and the reported speed is very accurate. The GPS unit also lists the posted speed limits on major highways.

Along with the GPS unit I purchased a portable friction mount which doesn't do as great a job as you might think. While taking a quick left turn the mount promptly slid down from my dashboard. Luckily I managed to grab it before it hit the floorboard.

I would recommend a Garmin GPS system as it has been touted as one of the best, but which model depends on your needs.
